A type 2 hypervisor runs along side a standard OS deployment rather than independently. It does not provide performance equivalent to separate physical computers. Therefore it is not generally recommended for high- traffic servers.
Hyper V- uses a different type of architecture. Hypter-V uses Type 1 virtualization in which the hypervisor is an abstration layer that interacts directly with the computers physical hardware.
Only available in the standard and data center editions. The Hyper-V Role is required for the OS to function as a computer’s primary partition, enabling it to host other VMs. You can then host other copies of windows server, or any server for that matter.
The primary difference between the Standard and Data center editions of Windows Server 2012 R2 is the number of VMs they support. When you install WS as a vm you must license it like any other server, virtual or physical. Using the data center editon allows you to license an unlimited number of VMs running Windows Server 2012 R2 on that one physical machine. The standard license allows you to license only two virtual instances.
